Actual Fact (New Zealand)

1 Jan 2019 - 1 Jan 2022

Short Synopsis

'There's the story, then there's the real story, then there's the story of how the story came to be told. Then there's what you leave out of the story. Which is part of the story too.' - Margaret Atwood

Actual Fact
is a new multi-sensory theatre show about perception and communication that incites an exploration of audience's own meaning-making processes. Premiering in November 2018, Actual Fact is the BATS Theatre 2018 STAB Commission, led by artists Isobel MacKinnon and Meg Rollandi. STAB is BATS Theatre’s annual major commission, awarded to creative teams who demonstrate bold leadership of new ideas and theatrical innovation.

Audience Experience
Everyone creates meaning and constructs narratives to make sense of the world. Both consciously or unconsciously, we are all meaning-makers. Meaning is also manufactured all around us, perhaps more so now than ever in the ‘post-truth’ era. This show is a playful response to this important moment in our local and global communities, and invites audiences to explore and reflect upon meaning-making and its wide-reaching (and sometimes hidden) effects on their daily lives.

The show will be performed by three female actors and features a multi-sensory performance design that includes layered AV, moving image, light, and surround sound components, to create a collage of experiences and narratives. Through sophisticated use of each technical element - space, light, sound, moving image, projection and live performance - the work creates an immersive experience for audiences in order to reveal something to them about how they personally construct meaning and ‘make sense’ of different types of information. The perspective of ‘whose story?’ or ‘what story’ or ‘what am I hearing or seeing?’ will be constantly shifting, sometimes gently with humour, at other times quickly and directly. This morphing and layering of content will give audiences an enquiring sensory journey that they will be invited to experience, translate and decipher in real time.
