PINAY (Auckland, New Zealand)
1 Jan 2021 - 3 Sep 2022
1991, Philippines. Mount Pinatubo has erupted. The ash settles in Christchurch, where the ground is also shifting, uncertain and evolving…
The first play developed through Fresh off the Page monthly play-readings, we are excited to bring you the groundbreaking Filipino-led production of PINAY - an explosive, moving and joyous romp shaking the foundations of Filipino and Kiwi culture.
A heart-filled story bursting with Filipino flair, PINAY collides race, relationships and religion as an immigrant family and their assimilated daughter Alex test the lengths we go to change for the ones we love.
"However, the story - like every story - is different. The strength of the show is not just in the excellent cast, the strong production value or the evocative writing but also in the cumulative effect of the rich and nuanced specificity of Filipino culture."
- NZ Herald
“PINAY is not just a play — it is the beginning of a conversation about culture, identity, and what it means to be Filipino."
"As I watch PINAY I feel like I’m being enveloped in a familiar warmth. It’s a warmth reminiscent of the comfort of a home cooked meal, or the intimacy of a well known embrace, or the rays of the afternoon summer sun kissing your skin."
"This attention to detail is present throughout the production, and is clearly representative of the care and passion put into this project by its key creatives."
