Night Light (Auckland, New Zealand)
9 Oct 2020 - 23 Dec 2022
In Night Light, Artistic Director and Arts Laureate Shona McCullagh presents a double bill of work by artists from Aotearoa.
Contrasting the vibrant aesthetic of Victoria Colombus in her work The Fibonacci with a premiere by Māori choreographer, Eddie Elliott (Ngāti Maniapoto), the 75 minute show includes one interval.
The Fibonacci was co-commissioned by the Festival of Colour and NZDC and with a cast of six, and utilises the numerical sequence throughout the work. “It starts with a contemplative illumination but soon becomes a river of intriguing movement." (Theatreview) With sound design by Rowan Pierce, lighting by Jo Kilgour and costumes by Elizabeth Whiting the work has been reviewed as "exciting, exhausting, exhilarating – and world class”(Otago Daily Times). This work was part of a programme that earned The New Zealand Dance Company a Best of the Festival of Colour Award from the Otago Daily Times.
Drawing on Eddie Elliott's background in haka and sign language, this will be a riveting work with a depth of exploration and Māori mythology. Currently in development, this programme will tour New Zealand in October 2020.
