Raising The Titanics (Auckland, New Zealand)
1 Oct 2018 - 31 Dec 2019
“Quick, someone get this band an agent. A homage to the Maori Showbands of the 1960s, the Titanics have all the harmonies, musicality, glamour and humour of their heroes.” Janet McAllister, NZ Herald
In the 1960s, Maori show bands revolutionise the New Zealand music scene and The Titanics lead the way. Taking inspiration from musical greats such as The Volcanics and The Quin Tikis, this play relives an era that changed music for good.
The Titanics were destined for greatness but broke up before they hit the big time. Aroha Devine, wants to find out why, but both her parents – Louie, the band’s manager, and Ripeka, the lead singer – are reluctant to reveal the secrets of their past.
Albert Belz’ entertaining script is complemented by live music including newly commissioned songs and show band classics from the era.
Raising The Titanics is a musical initiation for the young and a feel-good trip for those who were there. Find out what happens to the Titanics, perhaps the greatest show band to never exist.
