A Night in Paris (South Australia, Australia)

1 May 2018 - 31 Dec 2020

Short Synopsis

Adelaide singer and performer Louise Blackwell lived in France for many years. She submerged herself in French culture and the Parisian way of life and sang in the Paris jazz scene with many great jazz artists. With her show A NIGHT IN PARIS, she has brought her inspiration and the Parisian ambience back home, gathering some of Adelaide’s finest jazz musicians to take us out on a rollicking night in Paris.

Accompanied by Mark Ferguson on keys, Julian Ferraretto on violin, John Aué on double bass, Joshua Baldwin on drums and Tom Pulford on clarinet, A NIGHT IN PARIS celebrates the great French chanson tradition.

Louise Blackwell and the French Set perform a wonderful selection of songs by some of France’s many artists including Charles Trenet, Lucienne Boyer, Fréhel, Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, Juliette Greco, Boris Vian, Léo Ferré, Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Barbara and more! Louise depicts the world and context of the songs and recounts wonderful stories about the artists who once performed them, allowing the audience to engage with the songs as they are performed.

Winning an SA Bank Weekly Fringe Music Award in 2018, it is an infectious and entertaining French variety hour with a genuine Parisian ambience!

Reviews Feature

'Imagine yourself transported to an intimate French bar with luxurious, deep red velvet curtains, mirrors set into dark wood panelled walls, couples settled into cosy booths, the room filled with a hazy smoke and, on stage, a chanteuse of inimitable style and full of joie de vivre. This is A Night in Paris - Louise Blackwell and The French Set.

Louise Blackwell and band, The French Set perform, with passion and consummate skill, a range of songs as topical today as then, many of them in the musical style known as chanson realiste, which dealt with the lives of Paris's poor and working-class, songs that, by turns, speak to us of love and longing as well as small minded hypocrisy and life's disappointments.

Inhabiting her characters and songs both physically and vocally in a way that speaks to her early background in acting, Adelaide local, Blackwell, later moved to France to study, first cinema and literature and, later, jazz vocals. During her 10 years away, she performed in numerous Paris clubs, collaborating and performing with many great jazz singers and musicians.

In this, Blackwell has been consistent, as the band, The French Set, comprises some of Adelaide's finest jazz musicians. With Mark Ferguson on keyboard, Julian Ferraretto on violin, John Aué on double bass and Joshua Baldwin on drums, each in their own right prolific and talented, together they provide so very much more than just a backdrop to the vocals.'

‘…a standing ovation told how we had been seduced by a show sans pareil: Paris, tout c’est parfait…’ Jenny Roesler, RIP IT UP  Adelaide Fringe 2015

Her French flows effortlessly and delicately to sing the words of French love stories, the happy ones and the heartaches. The musicians’ personalities take hold and create a vibrant and lovable performance. Mark Ferguson on the keys, Julian Ferraretto on the violin and John Auè on double bass hold an idealistic French chanson repertoire including Serge GainsbourgGeorges Brassens and Jacques Brel.
