Whales (New Zealand)

1 Jan 2018 - 31 Dec 2019

Short Synopsis

When a pod of whales strands in a public outdoor space, bystanders must work together to care for them before they can return to the ocean.

Whales is a family-focused and participatory community-building event. It is suitable for streets, beaches and festivals. An indoor activity version for younger children (ages 4-10) is also available.

Reviews Feature

"People have to get over themselves and attend to the task at hand, and this is what happens. Remarkable." - John Symthe, Theatreview, NZ Fringe Festival 2013

“So good for them to learn something real, outside of the classroom,” says Ava's [child audience member] grandmother happily. For certain, something real has been shared." - Terry MacTavish, Theatreview review at Dunedin Festival 2016

"Voices join a haunting melody: “Ngā iwi e”. “It’s a Māori song,” someone tells me, “about people pulling together and standing strong.” The whales return to the ocean (or top of the steps). “That was strangely moving,” says a Scottish voice beside me." - Clare Brennan, The Observer, Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017
