PACT (Performing Arts Community Trust) was formed in 2016 for the following purposes:
- Promoting and supporting the composition, performance, recording and appreciation of new music and/or performing arts works in New Zealand for the benefit of the community;
- Promoting and supporting the performance and recording of music and/or performing arts works created less than five years before the proposed performance/recording; and
- Obtaining funding to sponsor projects that achieve the objectives listed above.
PACT’s first project was a major one – ensuring a premiere performance of a new music drama Flowing Water, written by renowned NZ writer Witi Ihimaera and composed by Janet Jennings, with added libretto and advice from Dr Tom Roa from University of Waikato and Tainui. The majority of funding was obtained from three major sources being Creative NZ, Mercury Energy and Tainui – with the proviso from Tainui that it must be performed in the 2018 Hamilton Garden Arts Festival. With a very short time frame to design the production and source professional opera singers, dancers, a chorus and kapa haka performing group, PACT successfully put this professional production together. Flowing Water was performed to critical and audience acclaim.
