Lab Kelpie is a not for profit theatre company dedicated to the production of new work by Australian playwrights.
We actively seek out works that engage audiences by interrogating with intelligence and vigour how relationships, power, family, love and politics function in the twenty first century.
As strong advocates of new writing, we support Australian playwrights by commissioning, developing, presenting and touring their work, encouraging our writers to take risks and inspire audiences with the themes and messages they want to explore.
“One of Australia’s most exciting independent theatre companies on the rise.” – Maxim Boon, The Music
Founded in the green hills of Gippsland by Artistic Director Lyall Brooks and Creative Producer Adam Fawcett in 2012, Lab Kelpie now has a base in Hepburn Shire in Victoria's Goldfields, and an office in Melbourne's iconic Meat Market building (supported by City of Melbourne's Creative Spaces program).
Their 2016 critically acclaimed production of Katy Warner’s A Prudent Man won the Audience Choice Award and WA Tour Ready Award from over 400 shows at the 2016 Melbourne Fringe Festival and was nominated for Best Performance.
Three of their latest works, Oil Babies by Petra Kalive, and A Prudent Man and Spencer by Katy Warner, have all garnered prestigious Green Room Award nominations.
From July to September 2019, Spencer will enjoy a 22-venue national Australian tour.
As at May 2019, Lab Kelpie productions have been performed 219 times to 14,273 audience members in 65 venues across Australia and New Zealand.
