Red Leap Theatre
Makers of New Zealand's most original visual theatre, Red Leap cross the forms of physical theatre, imagery and storytelling. We believe in the power of the imagination, building a strong ensemble of performers and providing transformative theatre experiences for all New Zealanders.
Founding members Kate Parker and Julie Nolan collaborated on three successful works: Moa Hunting, The Butcher’s Daughter, and Beyond the Blue before officially forming Red Leap Theatre Charitable Trust in 2008 with producer Lauren Hughes.
The Arrival was commissioned by the 2009 Auckland Arts Festival. Based on Shaun Tan’s graphic novel, The Arrival has toured throughout the Asia-Pacific region. In 2010 The Arrival was awarded six Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards. In 2018, The Arrival was remade at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre for audiences 8 years and older and included in the Out Of The Box Festival.
The 2011 Auckland Arts Festival commissioned a second award winning production Paper Sky.
In 2014 SEA premiered at the Maidment Theatre, Auckland.
Dust Pilgrim, inspired by the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, premiered at Q Loft in 2016 and toured the South Island in 2018.
Red Leap’s latest work Kororāreka – The Ballad of Maggie Flynn premiered at Q Rangatira in July 2017 and toured nationally in 2018.
