Cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins first joined forces in 2002 and with founding violinist Justine Cormack, were Ensemble in Residence at the University of Auckland from 2004 - 2009. Their artistry, intensity and approachability have captivated music-lovers throughout the Asia Pacific region, Europe and the US. The trio farewelled Justine in 2017 and will welcome a new colleague in 2018.
The trio actively commissions works by leading Australasian composers and their trade-mark eclectic programmes regularly feature the likes of John Psathas, Stuart Greenbaum, Jack Body, Gareth Farr, Dame Gillian Whitehead and Eve de Catsro-Robinson. Their commitment to new music has expanded to include highly talented emerging composers making NZTrio a driving force in the contemporary classical music industry.
NZTrio regularly collaborates with leading artists from across the artistic spectrum as well as dance and theatre companies which add exciting dimensions to their stage presence.
Described as a 'national treasure', critical acclaim for the group's performances extends to their ever-expanding catalogue of recorded work under the labels ABC Classics, Rattle and Atoll.
