Programming

About Q's programming

Q is a venue for hire.  Programming  is curated by our CEO and Executive Producer.  We consider every proposal using our programming policy as a guideline.   Before submitting an Expression of Interest it is recommended that where possible you visit Q itself, and visit our website to look at our spaces, atmosphere and programming style, and tailor your responses to suit.  You can download an EOI form here:

Our policy is to present contemporary, high quality work from professional performing artists, professional performing arts companies, Festivals and corporate events.  We may consider community group performances but they must be programmed as part of a Festival.

We are a regular venue for Auckland Arts Festival, NZ International Comedy Festival, Documentary Edge Film Festival, Tempo Dance Festival, Silo Theatre and Auckland Theatre Company.

Risk Share:  Q Presents

Q Presents is a contestable co-presentation programme, showcasing bold and boutique works across a range of performing art forms by some of New Zealand’s most promising contemporary artists.  The purpose of the programme is to assist developing arts leadership companies who are unable to take the full financial risk of producing a professional performance season. Both Q and the presenting company share both the financial risk and reward during the season.  Each arrangment is tailored specifically to the needs of the production, allowing the companies and Q the freedom and flexibility to work together.

Programming into Q Presents is via a submission and pitching process which begins in June each year.

Local Information

A culturally diverse and events-loving city, Auckland offers the largest concentrated audience in New Zealand. Located at the heart of the performing arts precinct on Queen St, Q Theatre is Auckland's only flexiform mid-size performance space. Q offers the opportunity to present engaging contemporary performances that engage with a broad, diverse and growing audience.

Adjacent to Aotea Square the hub of the city, Q Theatre sits alongside the large capacity Auckland Town Hall, Aotea Square and ASB Theatre and the smaller Basement Theatre and Comedy Classic Bar. Located in the centre, Q attracts a progressive audience to its diverse programme and our cafe and bar is a hub for artists and audiences day and night.
