The Townsville Civic Theatre is North Queensland's premier cultural facility owned and managed by Townsville City Council. Since its opening in 1978, the Theatre has been a dynamic centre of entertainment and performing arts, providing an environment to further develop the performing arts in Townsville and the North.
The venue has a 1014 seat theatre (Concert Mode) and C2 which is a 400m2 (20mx20m) open space. The theatre seating capacity can be reduced to 343 seat Intimate Mode by use of a transverse bi-parting traveller curtain. An orchestra pit is available for use which reduces seating capacity to 967 Concert Mode and 296 Intimate Mode.
C2 is a versatile space which has been used for cabarets, weddings, new vehicle launches, V8 Supercar media centre, information nights, rehearsal warm ups, etc. The space can be completely blacked out or opened up to a 20m outside reveal, a 20m wall with 2.4m mirrors & fixed ballet bar, and a 20m floor to catwalk (6m) projection wall or a combination thereof.
A typical year consists of a nine show Theatre Season, six Morning Melodies, a four show Children's Theatre Program, Australian Festival of Chamber Music in addition to a variety of hire-ins. The entire venue is booked out for the running of the Townsville 400 Supercar V8 series.
Townsville is a coastal city of approx 190,000 & is located adjacent to the centre of the Great Barrier Reef. Its skyline is dominated by Castle Hill from which you can gain panaromic views featuring the Port, The Strand walkway, Magnetic Island, Mount Stuart and Hervey's Range. The Performing Arts culture is deeply entrenched in Townsville, with many schools producing excellent end of year performances.
