TOURING PROJECT: CLIMATE OF CRUELTY

Climate of Cruelty will be a sound art installation and live performance work that sets out to explore a provocative sonic response to human desire over human ethics in relation to animals. In the absence of known eulogies and memorials for individual animals slaughtered in environmentally impacting commercial industries in Australia and globally, 'Climate of Cruelty' will face the evidence by commemorating the lives of animal species killed worldwide for food. The project will honour the animals who have suffered for our desires. It is a cry for animals, for nature, for change. It is a break in the silence of a world in crisis.

‘Climate of Cruelty’ is a new sound art and live performance work that sets out to explore a provocative sonic response to human desire over human ethics in relation to animals.

This work will be a heart-felt, informed, accessible & emotional artistic response to the Vitalstatistix Climate Century project and provocation: how will we commemorate and memorialise the climate century? My response is to create a live sound event that honours the animals who have suffered for our ongoing human desires. As artists we have a responsibility to address the major issues facing our times. The voices speaking out against animal cruelty, animal justice and the environmental impacts of factory farming are few but ever-growing.

My collaborators for this project include lighting/visual designer Geoff Cobham and sound technician/audio designer Sebastian Tomczak. I will work with queer/vegan writer Em König on shaping poetic and fractured texts for development into an online and physical publication. I will continue to work with my manager/creative producer Jennifer Greer Holmes to maintain and co-ordinate all aspects of the wider project.

This work takes me and my collaborators into less comfortable areas of research and artistic outcomes - and to engage with an industry outside of my usual sphere of work. The work allows me to extend my art practice and broaden my own knowledge in the field of climate research and its connection to sound and live performance making.

I will develop sound art works for each one of the top 10 animals killed for food each year. Of the 150 billion slaughtered annually the 'top' of the list are currently marine animals, chickens, ducks, pigs, rabbits, turkeys, geese, sheep, goats, cows and calves. Each of the animals will be honoured in a sonic eulogy, a memorial of electronic and experimental audio works to honour their deaths.

I want to make undertake this complex artistic project for the animals who’ve suffered for our desires, who’ve been the unwilling cogs in brutal money machines determined to destroy the earth. I want to name them and set their spirits free.
