Can't afford to attend an Arts Market? Check this out.

Nov 11, 2019

Have you ever wanted to attend an Arts Market but just couldn't afford to?

If you have work that you would like to tour, attending an arts market should be on your radar. Consider how the networking opportunities could impact your career. The costs to attend however are great, considering travel, accommodation and registration fees, not to mention your time. To cover these costs you should consider Australia Council's Career Development Fund.

As an independent artist you can apply for:

  • showcase opportunities
  • forum/workshop attendance
  • residencies
  • mentorships
  • arts market attendance and exploration.

Now is the time to research the markets and plan your strategy for the coming year. Take a look at PAC's Australian Arts Market Summary a great reference to find which markets are the right fit for you.

You might also consider exploring opportunities to attend international events and markets through the Australia Council's International Development initiatives. More details here - http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/international/current-opportunities/

Speak to an Australia Council grants officer for more information.

The next deadline is Tuesday 4 February for projects starting after 1 May 2020.

Take comfort in the fact that if you cannot make it to an arts market your work on the NTS is being showcased to presenters from all over Australia and New Zealand. Not all presenters can themselves get to an arts market, as can be attested by this NSW presenter "The NTS saves on time having to travel to arts markets. I can sit in the quietness of my office after hours and take my time to review the shows"
